Construction began in late summer 2009 with the demolition of the Thomas Riley Building, B-Wing . Demolition of the Murdoch Parkade along 16th Avenue—where the Centre Wing of the Trades and Technology Complex will be constructed—was completed in the fall 2009. Demolition of Colonel Walker Building to pave the way for the West Wing began in January 2010. In line with SAIT’s desire to follow the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System for the TTC project, concrete, rebar, copper and steel from the demolished building will be recycled. How will the new Complex attract youth to trades and technology careers? The Trades and Technology Complex will house the career exploration centre, an innovative and interactive learning centre for junior-high school students. Students will have an opportunity to engage in hands on learning and exploration in the areas of energy, construction and manufacturing and automation. Our goal is to engage youth to trades and technology careers which is critical to Alberta’s future economy. How will Albertans benefit from the Trades and Technology Complex?
THE GOVERNMENT What guarantee do you have that the Government of Alberta will follow through with their promise of $300 million for the Trades and Technology Complex? The government recognizes that increasing capacity will play an important role in building a strong workforce to improve Alberta’s long-term sustainability. Since the Province of Alberta announced their $300 million commitment to the Trades and Technology Complex in September 2008, they have remained highly committed and supportive of our project. The Government of Alberta reconfirmed its support for the Complex in the provincial budget on April 7, 2009 when it listed the Trades and Technology Complex as one of ten projects across Alberta to support learners in high demand programs in post-secondary institutions. top

We will continue to move forward with plans to raise the money, at the same time realizing and respecting individuals and corporations that may need to delay their commitment because of the current economic climate. We believe it is in the best long term interest of the Alberta economy to go ahead with the expansion of SAIT in order to deal with issues such as an aging workforce, skills shortages and future worker shortages when the economy recovers. When did the Promising Futures™ Campaign launch? The official launch took place during the week of October 13th, 2009 with celebrations targeted to SAIT’s key stakeholder groups—employees and students, donors, alumni and neighbouring communities. On Friday, October 16th, 2009, 400 guests attended the President’s Gala to officially launch the Promising Futures™ Campaign. The black-tie event featured a sumptuous dinner prepared by SAIT’s award-winning culinary students.
